Ingrid Donat currently stands as one of the most influential living artists in Decorative Arts. She’s recognised for her bronze and Tribal-inspired furniture pieces and in 2023 has developed her tableware collection entitled Bijoux de Table.

The Artist’s team approached nPack with specific requirements about the box with velvet lining for the 2 sets in the collection: a set of individually crafted napkin rings and another one of intricately crafted table coasters with their stacking stand.

THE CHALLENGE

2 different sets, 1 box

Ingrid Donat Studio tasked our team with the development of the interior design of the box, to perfectly house the artist’s items from the two different sets.

Altering sets would use the same box size. The different tableware items differed in height, and it was necessary to fix them well in their positions without the risk of displacement.

In line with nPack’s environmental philosophy, the inlays would use no plastic or foam components.

THE CREATION

The ideal interior structure

We worked together with our client’s team on the design review of the provided packaging mockup. Based on our efficient idea that different inlays would be placed in the same box, we developed the interiors for tableware sets and advised the box capacity which would perform best.

We designed 2 different arrangements with precisely calculated openings. After design improvements by nPack, we achieved a reduction of 13 mm in box depth compared to the customer’s enquiry, resulting in significant material consumption optimization.

Material evaluation

Extending our packaging development service before the production, we provided the client with a selection of sample swatches of papers in gold and black (smooth and textured) together with foil blocked samples for verification of the material palette and assessment of the foil colours.

Pre-production sample approval

To ensure the compliance of the improved product with the client’s idea, we went through a pre-production sample stage. We prepared boxes to be tested with the items from the two collections. Parallel to the size and fitment of the inlays, we offered verification of different inner tray constructions for the leather coasters pack.

BOX SIZE EFFICIENCY

Knowing the exact dimensions of both interior designs allowed us to discuss box size optimization before proceeding to order. After design improvement by nPack, we achieved a reduction of 13 mm in box depth compared to the customer’s enquiry.

INLAY FOR NAPKIN RINGS

The Set de 6 Ronds De Serviette Baka features six individually crafted napkin rings. Ingrid Donat’s studio designers had a clear idea about the design concept. During the Design Validation stage, we adapted the concept through a suitable solid-board-based structure for the napkin rings. The hidden base that supports the rings was precisely tested in height & lined with velvet.

INLAY FOR LEATHER COASTERS AND STAND

The Set De 6 Dessous De Verre Avec Support features six intricately crafted table coasters which can be decoratively stacked in a matching stand.

We developed two variants of the containers for the coasters – one with a ribbon pull and another one with a slot. During the prototyping stage, we crafted the two optional inner trays for the coasters providing our client with a choice for best functionality. The ribbon pull was the winner.

BOX BANDEROLE & STICKERS

For extra protection and to enhance the unboxing experience our client considered adding a sleeve element in matching colours. Used during transport, it completed the packaging ensemble. As a second role, produced in optional colours, it made it possible to distinguish the different collection sets from the outside. Contrasting stickers were the finishing touch to the packaging concept.

CRAFTED TO PERFECTION

With the completed box design, we proceeded to the production of the first order run and delivered the beautiful boxes to our client. Our custom manufacturing process involved manual lining with velvet paper for each level, the tray bottom and the lid inside. All parts were assembled by hand. Each box left our factory after meticulous quality control checks.
